As preparations intensify for the unveiling of the University of Public Relations and Leadership (UPRL) this November, the project initiator, Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has sought the partnership of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to set up a smart campus at the University located in Gudi, Nasarawa state.
President of NIPR, Dr. Ike Neliaku who presented this request on Monday, June 29, 2026 in Abuja during a courtesy call on the leadership of NCC said equipping the university with smart features has become necessary in view of the global attention it is garnering as the first sector-based public relations university, scheduled for official unveiling in November, when Nigeria will host the World Public Relations Forum (WPRF).
According to Dr. Neliaku, the project presents Nigeria opportunity to make a bold statement on its capacity to provide leadership in the area of cutting-edge technology as against sticking to analogue system.
"Our target is to establish a model digital university through partnership with this Commission. The whole world is now looking forward to Nigeria and this is an opportunity to tell a story of what we truly represent. Also, we are looking at a situation where we can have a kind of research on broadband adoption, community awareness, digital inclusion and so on through this partnership. It will be a legacy for NCC to have a very strong foothold in this university so that in years to come, people who come there will see your legacy", he stated.
In his response, the Executive Vice Chairman/CEO, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida commended the leadership of NIPR for making Nigeria proud with its laudable initiatives, including winning the hosting right for WPRF as well as the university project, first of its kind in communication sector globally.
He pledged to Commission's readiness to join efforts with NIPR to positively project the nation's image within and outside the country, saying it is a patriotic duty every Nigerian owes the nation.
According to the NCC boss, the Commission under his leadership has prioritised transparent billing and value for telecommunications subscribers, including awarding compensations where necessary as a way of deepening their confidence in NCC as a regulatory body.
"We appreciate and understand that we need to create and environment that will provide high quality and low cost internet connectivity to all Nigerians. We are putting in place initiatives geared towards building a more resilient and higher capacity backbone", he stated.
